EWI Donates 2,005 Books to the Brightwood Elementary
School
Reach Out and Read Program in Washington D.C.
April 2005
EWI Academy of Leadership Alumni spent
part of their Leaders’ Summit in Washington, D.C. this past April
sitting on the floor reading story books with big letters and pretty pictures.
It was actually part of a very rewarding experience as they helped to
kick-off the 2005 Reading Rallies with the help of 40 inquisitive preschoolers
and a famous storybook character.
Donning “Be a Leader – Be a Reader” t-shirts
EWI leaders hand-delivered boxes of books to a D.C. classroom - representing
a donation of 2005 books to children who participate in the nationwide
Reach Out and Read program in Washington, D.C. and Virginia – before
hosting a “press conference” for the children about the book
donation, EWI Reading Rallies and the importance of reading.
The event was attended by WABC-TV (subsequent
newspaper coverage appeared in the Washington Post), with EWI Board President
Michelle Lovatt serving as spokesperson and EWI members serving as official
storytellers. Representatives from Reach Out and Read – a program
that partners with pediatrician offices to promote literacy – reinforced
the message about loving books and learning. From the children’s
point of view, however, Clifford the Big Red Dog™ stole the show.
