Doris Assemien
EWI of Dallas
“I am majoring in International Business and plan to use my college diploma along with my knowledge and experience to help my country and African people to efficiently use their resources to become self-sufficient one day.”
Doris is sophomore at Tarrant County College and a single mother of a two year old son. She fled the Ivory Coast of West Africa because of the civil war that was raging there. Doris is involved in the International Student Union on campus and wants to be a model of dedication to show it is possible to realize one's dreams despite a bad situation.
Michelle Brothers
EWI of San Antonio
“My goal is to become a middle school teacher in either social studies or language arts. The opportunity to impart her love of learning to her students is an exciting prospect for me. I look forward to the prospect of planning and implementing what I have learned into my own classroom.”
Michelle Brothers is a 34-year-old single mother who has two daughters, Molly and Kelsea, who are her pride and joy. After a struggle with bi-polar disorder and a difficult divorce, Michelle returned to school and is now an honor student at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is working toward a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and plans on graduating in May 2009.
Kimberly Bundy
EWI of Rochester
“My ultimate goal is to someday become a manager of a health information department or obtain a teaching certificate to be able to teach the skills and pass on the knowledge I have gained to others wanting to enter the medical transcription field.”
Kimberly Bundy is enrolled at Rochester Community and Technical College in the Health Information Technology courses. She is currently employed as a Medical Transcriptionist at the Austin Medical Center and works from home. She has been a Girl Scout Leader for the past five years. Kimberly says, “Thanks to EWI’s generosity and acknowledgement, I am encouraged and confident in the course I have set for myself.”
Deborah Cesari
EWI of Columbus
“I hope to center my career on counseling women who are victims of childhood trauma and abuse.”
Deborah Cesari is attending Ashland Theological Seminary to obtain a masters degree in clinical counseling. She feels it is her life calling to work with women in a counseling setting. Along with counseling, she also taught small groups on the subjects of budgeting, self-esteem, parenting, and other life skills. Presently, she is doing an internship at a halfway house, working with clients who have drug and alcohol addictions.
Yvonne Creighton
EWI of Nashville
“Graduating from Middle Tennessee State University in May 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing will be the fulfillment of many years of experience and work that will give my family and me a sense of pride and accomplishment.”
Yvonne has been a stay-at-home mom for 17 years, during which time she has been actively involved in her children’s faith formation, sports, and other activities including scouting. After her seventh child was born, she made the decision to return to school. Caring for children all these years has solidified her commitment to maternal and child nursing.
Kelly Dolinar
EWI of Des Moines
“I aspire to become a Legal Administrative Assistant at the Des Moines law firm where I am employed.”
Kelly Dolinar, 32, is a student of the Des Moines Area Community Legal Assistant Program. She maintains a 3.0 GPA. In her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking, traveling, and is a competitive runner. Kelly has participated in several local races. She also enjoys spending time with family, especially her three sons.
Ana Garcia
EWI of Houston
“I will continue being an example to my children and other people, encouraging them to get an education in order to have a better quality of life.”
Ana Garcia is from Mexico and has three children. Four years ago her husband had a fatal accident, making her a single parent. Since she had gotten a certificate in accounting when she was living in Mexico, she decided to go back to school and to continue in the same field. Now, she is in her last semester of community college and will start classes in the spring at Sam Houston State University.
Annette Knuckles
EWI of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky
“Everyone has the opportunity to find and achieve their dreams; it just takes endless hard work and dedication. It is never too late to change, you just have to be determined, and committed. I believe that we can all turn our dreams into reality.”
Annette is 34 years old, and a single mother of three teenage children. Soon after her divorce she decided to pursue her education. After nearly eight years she has earned her GED, Associates of Applied Business, and will have earned a Bachelors of Business in 2008. Her goal is to continue on to graduate school and to have earned an MBA by the end of 2010.
Erin McDonald
EWI of Saint Paul
“It is my goal to earn a baccalaureate degree majoring in history and secondary education. While teaching high school, I plan to work towards my master’s and doctorate degrees so that I may someday give back to non-traditional education by becoming a professor at a community college.”
Erin Denise McDonald is 26 years old, a full-time student, and a full-time single mom. Her days revolve around her six year-old Autistic son, Kylethan, and her studies. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA and is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honors Society in which she is currently Vice President of Scholarship.
Shakira Sloane
EWI of Richmond
“I hope to secure employment in the medical field while I take required nursing classes to become a registered nurse.”
Shakira has four sons and after leaving high school, she worked as a cashier and focused on raising her boys. At the age of 24, Shakira applied and was accepted into the Middle College Program. She received her GED with a 4.0 grade point average. She has completed her CPR and CAN training and will complete the certification for phlebotomy before the end of 2007.
Gina Yarrish
EWI of Denver
“I am a strong-willed individual with the motivation to succeed. My goal is to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.”
Gina recently completed her first year at Front Range Community College in Denver. She has three children, and has struggled financially since her divorce five years ago. This semester Gina felt it as time to take control of her future, so she left a full-time job as a Pharmacy Technician in a large Denver hospital and works on weekends at night so she will have more time for her studies as well as her family.
