Introduction: Each year, EWI Chapters make a “Special Delivery” to students in their communities: Scholarship Awards. The following are Corporate scholarship winners, selected from first place Chapter scholarship winners. We applaud the efforts of these students in preparing themselves to be valuable contributors to society. EWI’s investment in these motivated individuals will pay back many fold – for themselves, their families, and their communities.
FIRST PLACE
Lulu Xiao
EWI of Portland
The 2007 First Place Scholarship was funded by EWI of Tulsa in honor of Corporate President Judy Russell.
“I plan to pursue a career in international business and have the pleasure of discovering the world. Ultimately though, I want to establish free clinics and improve healthcare in China.”
- Ranks first in her class of 537 as a full International Baccalaureate student
- Elected senior class president for 2007-2008
- Elected as the co-president of the Model United Nations Club and the Matale Sister School Club
- Raised over $12,000 for Southridge’s sister school in Matale, Uganda, in the past year
- Member of National Honor Society and the Speech and Debate Club
- Student representative to Southridge’s City Council and Student Staff Action Council
- Co-chair of the Beaverton Mayor’s Youth Advisory Board and the Washington County Youth Advisory Council.
- Enjoys swimming, having the honor of making varsity and lettering three years in a row
- Passed level 10 in piano
SECOND PLACE
Kristin Nichols
EWI of Tulsa

“I plan to earn an engineering degree and later attain a PhD in medicine or another science related field. My goal is to one day work at NASA as a rocket scientist, aerospace engineer, or medical geneticist.”
- Has accomplished 700 hours of community service
- Elected President of the National Honor Society
- Runs varsity track and cross-country after school
- Named “Student of the Year” and Miss Union Royalty
- Founded the Einstein Science Club and participates in many state and national science programs
THIRD PLACE
Devin Newsom
EWI of Oklahoma City
“I plan to major in Political Science while in college. I would like to become a trial lawyer in Oklahoma City and run for local political offices. I plan to be mayor of Oklahoma City one day.”
- Ranks in the top 5% of his class
- President-Elect for the Student Council
- Editor of the school newspaper,
- President of Fellowship of Christian Athletes
- Member of the National Honor Society.

Ricardo Corona
EWI of San Antonio
“I hope to attend MIT or the University of California at Berkley and major in physics and mathematics, eventually earning a doctoral degree in a field related to quantum physics.”
- Fourth in his class of 719
- Member of the National Honor Society
- Activities include the Indian Sub-Continental Club, Key Club, Spanish Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Debate, and Model UN
- Attended the University of California Summer Academy
- Enrolled in an advanced journalism course at Judson Satellite School
- An International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate since ninth grade
Lane Gallett
EWI of Phoenix
“My life-long dream is to be an elementary school teacher. I would like to be able to influence children so that they can aspire to be the best that they can be and instill in them the quality of leadership, giving them the ability to make good clear- cut choices in their lives.”
- Has a 4.0 GPA has been first in her class since her freshman year
- Member of the National Honor Society

- Class Vice President for the past three years
- Works as a life guard where she also gives swim lessons to children
Megan Novak
EWI of Chicago
“Megan plans to attend college to major in Biology and minor in Latin. She would like to combine these interests with her love of helping people to one day become a genetic counselor.”
- Among top of her class finishing out her junior year with a GPA of 4.3
- An active Girl Scout of 11 years and is currently working on her Gold Award
- Created a Girl Scout patch to educate girls on the importance of calcium in their diets, over 16,000 girls have earned the patch
- Spends her time volunteering at scout camps and at a local nursing home
Kelsey Meybin
EWI of Richmond
“Math, Physics, and French are my favorite subjects. I find them interesting and challenging and someday I hope to put all of these interests together to find a fulfilling career.”
- Golfer and captain of her high school golf team in which she competes in several junior tours

- Counselor at a muscular dystrophy camp for the past two summers
Katherine Weise
EWI of Houston
“I am interested in the medical field and plan to study nursing at a small university. I have always loved children and hope to work in some kind of pediatric setting.”
- Lived the majority of her life in Guadalajara, Mexico
- Worked at an oral surgeon’s office, developing x-rays, cleaning instruments, and assisting in surgery, sparking her interest in medicine
- Participates in her church youth group
